Hiking Trails in Poasito, near San José
Escape Poasito has two 5 km loop trails: one through pastures with lookout points and one through cloud forest. They share the first 2 km, where they split, and 1 km from the entrance there is a detour to the waterfall, so you can choose according to your pace and your appetite for adventure. The waterfall can be seen from both trails.

Las Vacas Trail
- 📏 5 km, loop
- ⏱️ 1.5 – 2 hours
- 🌿 Pasture, open country, panoramic views and lookouts
- 🐾 Pets welcome on a leash
A walk through pasture and open country with panoramic views the whole way. From the trail you can see the waterfall and the green mountain landscape, with frequent sightings of cows and local wildlife. Perfect if you want open space and views without much technical effort.

Jilguero Trail
- 📏 5 km, loop
- ⏱️ 2 – 3 hours
- 🌄 Cloud forest, birds and native flora
- 🐾 Pets welcome on a leash
A more technical adventure through primary forest, with a view of the waterfall along the way. The terrain is more demanding, with possible mud and steeper slopes, but the reward is total immersion in the Costa Rican cloud forest: birds, native flora and landscapes you won't forget.
Which trail should you choose?
If you are visiting with family or kids, or want an easy walk with great views, the Las Vacas Trail is the one. If you are in good shape, love the forest and don't mind a little mud, you will enjoy the Jilguero Trail more. With a single entrance ticket you can walk both, as many times as you like.
